Brake services for Sprinter.

At some point, your Sprinter will likely require brake repairs to continue performing reliably. Below, you’ll find a quick overview of some common brake services, and how to tell if/when they’re needed:

Brake Pad, Rotor, Speed Sensors Replacement:

Brake pads extend the brake system’s life by preventing the calipers and rotors from grinding together. Generally, replacement is recommended every 20,000 miles, but if you notice a high-pitched screeching sound during braking, be sure to book a service appointment as soon as possible.

Brake Line Replacement:

Brake lines are responsible for transferring fluid from your master cylinder to the rest of the brake system, keeping it lubricated and functional. If your vehicle pulls to one side during braking, or if your brake pedal feels “spongy”, a leaky or worn brake line could be to blame.

Master Cylinder Replacement:

The master cylinder’s job is to regulate the brake fluid’s pressure for maximum efficiency. Master brake cylinders seldom require replacement; however, two telltale signs of a problem are leaking fluid and a sinking brake pedal.

Brake fluid “Bleeding”:

feel “squishy” when applied, a technician may recommend this procedure. If the presence of water is 3% or more this is a critical level and an urgent replacement is needed.

Worn and Uneven Brake Rotor Surface on Sprinter.

Here’s an interesting case on 12 years old Sprinter van. 2007 Sprinter RV has covered only 10,000 miles in 12 years. After inspecting the brake rotors on this Sprinter Van, we found deep vinyl-like grooves. This is clearly a problem and a bad sign. At the same time, the thickness of the brake pads had an even larger margin.

After we removed the pads, everything became clear. Due to the time and the weather, and the small run, pads began to crumble. Because of these pads, the rotors were damaged and need to be replaced.

Sometimes this rust appears on the brake lines. Rust loves to eat your main parts in Sprinter.

Brake fluid test.

Make sure you don’t have water in your brake fluid. If the water content exceeds 3%+, we urgently advise that the fluid must be changed as the wet boiling point has been reached. When the 3% mark is exceeded, the boiling point of the fluid drops to between 140°C and 180°C.
DOT brake fluids are hygroscopic. That means they absorb water from the humidity in the air around them. Even with the brake reservoir lid tightly sealed, eventually, enough moisture will contaminate the fluid.

What’s so bad about water in the brake fluid? Well, brake fluid is incompressible under pressure, and since it has a high boiling point, the heat from your brakes isn’t enough to cause it to boil. But water has a much lower boiling point. If the moisture-contaminated brake fluid starts boiling, it creates gas bubbles. Gas is compressible. So when you step on the brake pedal and create hydraulic pressure in the brake system, instead of that force being transferred to your brake pads in order to grip your rotors (or drums) and slow your car down, that force is wasted compressing that gas.
